Wikipedia:Requests for page protection

Page semi-protected
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Wikipedia:Rfp)
Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here.

Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection)

After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:ProtectedPages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

Current requests for increase in protection level

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Place requests for protection increases at the BOTTOM of this section. If you cannot find your request, check the archive of requests or, failing that, the page history. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent disruptive editing – Multiple IPs adding citation needed tag to sourced content without explanation. XxTechnicianxX (talk) 22:41, 23 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Temporary semi-protection: Persistent disruptive editing – Repeated unhelpful IP edits. Trailblazer101 (talk) 22:41, 23 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Extended confirmed protection: Arbitration enforcement. Filmssssssssssss (talk) 23:41, 23 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – Edit-warring, multiple IPs from Greater Washington DC. Block evasion by Special:Contributions/70.183.0.0/21 and Special:Contributions/198.24.31.113. Continuing the disruption of Special:Contributions/2600:4040:207B:A700:B1B4:8050:CBC:99F, Special:Contributions/2600:4040:2885:5C00:59F9:1294:DD2E:BF2, Special:Contributions/50.144.192.106, Special:Contributions/98.160.51.12, Special:Contributions/198.24.31.86 and Special:Contributions/198.24.21.128. Reason: Last year, I requested protection (see further discussion here); that request was ultimately denied and I let it go, believing that yes, they were frustrating edits, but that it would be better to err on the side of assuming good faith. However, once again an IP editor (from a newly-used IP) has made disruptive edits:

Recently, other IP editors have just simply caused more work to be done through edits that have:

Also, even before the massive amounts of IP edits that have been made since 2024, there has historically been vandalizing by IP editors on this page across several years; examples include: 2017 (1); 2018 (2); 2019 (4, 5); 2022 (6, 7); 2023 (8). The nature of this list being the win-loss records of NBA teams probably attracts some NBA fans to inflate or deflate a team's win-loss record based on their feelings about that team, which is something I've seen over on the analogous NFL list from my time editing that one.

I previously nominated this list for featured list status in 2022, but withdrew the nomination at the time. I think the list is currently a lot closer to FL than it was when I withdrew that nom, but the IP edits have created a lot more work to then have to clean up. Considering that in 2024, there were more unregistered edits to this list than from 2015-2023 combined, and that already in 2025, there have been more unregistered edits than in any year prior to 2024, I do not have confidence that these unregistered edits will slow down or make things easier to maintain. So, I am once again kindly requesting any form of page protection. Soulbust (talk) 00:21, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Since I made this request, unregistered edits have once again:
Please add a page protection to aid with this issue. Soulbust (talk) 09:24, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Temporary semi-protection. আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 00:56, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Extended confirmed protection: Arbitration enforcement. Zinderboff (talk) 01:14, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Reason: The subject of this article recently made a "deathbed confession" that he touched a UFO or something. The article has been the subject of extensive off-WP canvassing and advocacy by UFO enthusiasts on X (e.g. [1] and Reddit (e.g. of five different Reddit threads [2]). The results has been a steady stream of problematic edits by WP:SPAs. A week or two of semi-protection would allow a bit of breathing room. Chetsford (talk) 03:16, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Temporary semi-protection: Persistent Vandalism. 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 03:48, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Declined – Not enough recent disruptive activity to justify protection. Only one problematic edit in last 30 days. Chetsford (talk) 09:54, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – Persistent vandalism stemming from previous protection log. livelikemusic (TALK!) 04:08, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – Tried to report IP to AIV, but since it's already partially blocked, the cleanup bot just auto-deletes the request as already solved... Nswix (talk) 06:06, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

(Non-administrator comment) In that situation, taking the IP to ANI and explaining the issue would probably be better than stopping all IPs from editing the page. QwertyForest (talk) 07:06, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Reason: Disruptive WP:FORUM, WP:ASPERSIONS and WP:DENY editing by IPs. Too bad a lot of well-meaning editors fell for dignifying them with replies. Borgenland (talk) 07:57, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Full protection: Edit-warring / content dispute. Left guide (talk) 08:26, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Temporary semi-protection: Persistent Vandalism. randomdude121    08:35, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Reason: The page should be protected to ensure the accuracy and reliability of its content. Since it may be a high-profile or frequently visited page, allowing unregistered users to edit it increases the risk of vandalism, misinformation, or unverified changes. Editedit446 (talk) 09:54, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection: edit wars and unsourced changes after the end of the last protection (April 6)--Luke Stark 96 (talk) 10:31, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – Vandalism. Sjö (talk) 10:51, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinite semi-protection: Persistent addition of unsourced or poorly sourced content – Requesting this is upped from indefinite pending changes to indefinite semi-protection. It would benefit reviewers from reverting numerous unsourced edits per week, and would bring it in line with List of EastEnders characters, where unregistered editors request for an edit to be made with a source. – Meena11:16, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinite extended confirmed protection: Recent spate of disruption, and this is covered by general sanctions that place the whole topic area under an extended confirmed restriction. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 12:19, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for reduction in protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin on their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.

    • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page, click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page," which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
    • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
    • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
    • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page, please add {{Edit fully-protected}} to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected, please use the section below.

Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Unprotection: Article was protected in 2019 for sockpuppetry/vandalism. I have found no evidence that this vandal is still active, and the article seems unlikely to become a vandalism magnet again over five years later. Pinging protecting admin El C. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 12:30, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinite semi-protection: Extended confirmed is overkill for the level of vandalism on this page. AnonymousScholar49 (talk) 12:13, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Declined No, as this falls under Wikipedia:Contentious topics/American politics; furthermore, also see Talk:Elissa Slotkin, where a requirement of being extended-confirmed to be able to edit the article is stipulated. Lectonar (talk) 12:22, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for edits to a protected page

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

    • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among {{Edit protected}}, {{Edit template-protected}}, {{Edit extended-protected}}, or {{Edit semi-protected}} to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
    • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the {{Edit COI}} template should be used.
    • Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
    • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
    • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.
